Iran exposed 10-man Bahrain and ended up with a resounding 6-0 victory that allows them to take control of group E. For Bahrain, it slides them back to third in the group behind Qatar.
Bahrain only had 11 men on the pitch for about two minutes when Rashid Al Hooti lost his cool and was shown a red card. It was always going to be hard for Bahrain to get a result, but the loss of a man so early made it next to impossible.
Iran scored three in each half, all from different goalscorers. They were especially dangerous from set pieces, scoring from a couple of corners. It could have been worse for Bahrain too, as Iran had countless chances.
Jalal Hosseini knocked in the opener on an easy tap in the 22nd minute. Mojtaba Jabbari added the second about 10 minutes later with a right-footed shot across goal. HAdi Aghily scored the third just before halftime with a towering header on a corner.
Andranik Teymourian, who was the best player on the field for most of the game, was rewarded for his efforts with a goal at the start of the second half. Karim Ansarifard and Gholamreza Rezaei completed the scoring with goals in the second half.
Iran now sits atop group E with seven points from three games while Bahrain sits one point behind Qatar with four points from three matches.
