Japan, Uzbekistan Play Thrilling Draw

The two group C favorites demonstrated their quality in a back-and-forth 1-1 draw in Uzbekistan. The result guarantees that both remain at the joint-top of the group.

Uzbekistan started the match the better of the two sides, hitting the post in the first few minutes. They continued to press for the opener, which they were rewarded with in the eighth minute. A corner was not cleared by Japan, and 2008 Asian Footballer of the Year Server Djeparov volleyed home.

After the goal Japan turned up the pressure and were unlucky not to equalize before halftime. Ignatiy Nesterov played well in net for Uzbekistan, making a couple of nice saves. Right before the half, Japan struck the post.

Finally in the 65th, Japan's constant pressure resulted in a goal. A cross was played in from the right side and was met at the far post by Shinji Okazaki who scored with an amazing diving header.

Both sides had chances to win the match, but none were able to capitalize. They both have four points from the opening two matches, while North Korea sits third with three points in the group of death.
