Iraq and Singapore both dropped their opening game and desperately needed a win in this match. Iraq was low on confidence after its 2-0 defeat to Jordan while Singapore took positives from its 2-1 loss to China. However, none of that mattered in this match, two second half goals propelled Iraq to a 2-0 triumph.
After a scoreless first half, Alaa Al-Zahra struck the back of the net with a brilliant header to the corner following a flick-on from a teammate. It is Al-Zahra's second goal of qualifying, he scored against Yemen in round two.
Younis Mahmoud made sure of the three points in the 86th minute with his 35th international goal. A long ball was played into the box that he was able to touch over the keeper's head and into the goal.
This win gets Iraq back on track and the side will next face China on the road in October. Singapore on the other hand, loses its positive vibes from its performance against the Chinese, and must try to bounce back in Jordan.
