Group C in the third round of Asian qualifying was credited with being the group of death. Today it became the first of the five groups to be decided as Japan and Uzbekistan sealed progression to the fourth round with wins.
Japan traveled to bottom dwellers Tajikistan and return home with a comfortable 4-0 victory. Yasuyuki Kono opened the scoring for the visitors late in the first half before Shinji Okazaki added two in the second half sandwiched in between a strike from Ryoichi Maeda.
Uzbekistan secured its place with a 1-0 triumph in North Korea. The lone goal was scored by Timur Kapadze early in the second half. North Korea becomes the first side who made the 2010 World Cup to be eliminated in qualifying.
